To achieve 'peak performance' is of course the quest of every owner and trainer, and involves many different, intertwined aspects such as training, diet, and environment; however a harmonious balance must be achieved within the cardiovascular system enabling the correct transport of oxygen plus nutrient laden blood around the body (true fuel injection). A synchronicity must be achieved within the chambers and beating of the heart to ensure that blood pressure is as balanced as possible. Of course anything that enables deeper inhalation and more effective gaseous exchange within the lungs will increase oxygen levels in the blood leading to further energy. One only has to look at horses flaring nostrils after a gallop to realise the vastly increased quantity of oxygen needed.
